Now that all of the inked and painted character portraits are finished, I am putting together the Concept Art Poster. This is missing only a few elements. The circles at the bottom show the locations for the “Logo Sponsorship” placement. I’ve moved the “Lunatics” logo up to the top. This is very close to the poster you will receive if you’ve requested it ($8, $15, $25 levels — see the descriptions for details). Character Drawings are by Daniel Fu. Digital ink & paint and poster layout are by Terry Hancock.
“Logo Sponsorships” Now Just $200 I have just reduced the “sponsorship” reward from $400 to $200, as there is now much less of a gap to close. I also limited the sponsorships to four, which increases the visibility of each one. For that money, we’ll include your name and logo prominently on this project: There is just 12 HOURS in which to sign up for this, though! So act fast, if you’re going to do it.
Allen Emerson is the last of the portraits for the Concept Art Poster. “R. Allen Emerson is a Conceptual Artist most known for his work in active and intelligent materials media. He made his name in the New York circuit winning the Andy Warhol Prize in Experimental and Performance Arts for his ground-breaking installation “Consciousness and Mechanism” presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts. His visionary exploration of non-static images of dramatic simplicity, and his pioneering work in interactive art has made Emerson a leader in the modern trans-humanist zeitgeist movement.
After doing several of the others, I thought I’d come back and try putting shadows and highlights on Sarah’s portrait. I also decided to color her hair more naturally. “Dr. Sarah Allison is one of the foremost authorities on moon morphology and geophysics. She has clocked over 100 hours exploring the moon’s surface. She holds the George P. Kokh Chair in lunar planetology at New Mexico State University. Currently she is to be found at the European University Collectives Marius Hills Lava tube expedition in the Ocean of Storms on the Lunar surface.” Drawing by Daniel Fu. Digital ink and paint by Terry Hancock.
Here is the Concept Art Portrait for Igor Timothy Farmer / Tim. “Timothy Farmer son of Anya Titova Farmer and Joshua Farmer is the communications assistant on the ISF colony. He runs his own highly ranked web channel about the LIBRE project. He has plans to get a degree in computer science.” Drawing by Daniel Fu. Digital ink & paint by Terry Hancock.
Wow! We are past the halfway mark today. I’m really pretty excited by that. Each of you probably has a circle of friends who may not have heard about this project, so if you each were to get a friend or two to back it as well, we might just make it before the deadline tomorrow night. I’ve also just added a new $8 level for which I can send out folded copies of the Concept Art Poster. That’s both because we’ve already offset the cost of the first few prints, and because they are much cheaper to ship folded.
If the $15/$25 poster reward seems too high, you might be interested in this: we can send you the same poster for just $8 if we fold it for shipping. After the first few are printed, additional copies of the Concept Art Poster don’t cost much to print, and so the main expense is the cost of shipping a mailing tube. This is especially true for international addresses. However, if I just fold the 11″ x 17″ sheet in half to 8.5″ x 11″ , it will ship in a standard-size document envelope, and this is really inexpensive for both USA and International addresses.
Continuing with themes in the stories for Lunatics… Here’s number twelve: Theme #12 Irrational Reasons versus Rational Excuses for Space Pioneering I know a number of space advocates who claim they want to develop space in order to get “filthy rich”. This is (or was, at least) a very popular claim, especially among openly Libertarian or Republican space enthusiasts as part of a “business-oriented” agenda. There’s just one problem: I don’t care what business plan you come up with, I guarantee you there is an easier way to make that money here on Earth than to do it by developing space.
Another color portrait for the Concept Art Poster — this is Joshua Farmer / Josh. “Joshua Farmer (Ph.D.) received his Doctorate in Space Agriculture for his work on rapid-growth high yield crops. He was recruited to work at the Lunar Installation and Biological Research Interprise (LIBRE) to prepare crops for the colonization effort. He remained on as one of the colonization candidates and was chosen for the first team.” Original pencil drawing by Daniel Fu. Digital ink & color by Terry Hancock.
