In 2010, we got more serious about the idea of “Lunatics!” I formalized the story concept. Rosalyn Hunter and Terry Hancock wrote drafts of the pilot story. Terry collected a lot of CC-licensed music for constructing soundtracks, and conceived of a pilot episode story as a kind of proof-of-principle animation demo. At the time, we imagined getting voice actors would be a challenge, and the idea was that having animation to show would help with that — but at the same time, we didn’t want our amateurish voice work to bring it down. As a result, the pilot episode was originally conceived to be nearly silent (voiceless) — like a long music video. Which is what a lot of experimental animations are. The focus would be on visual imagery.
I wrote about this phase of the project in my ongoing Free Software Magazine column, as well as covering Morevna Project (to which I also contributed some work — mainly providing editing for the English language translation of the script).
